How to get a HGV licence
Step one: choosing your HGV licence
Once you’ve chosen the HGV licence that best suits your needs and the career you’re interested in pursuing, you can enquire to book your HGV training package online via an online enquiry form.
Once your enquiry has been submitted, you’ll receive a dedicated account manager who will be in touch to confirm your booking.
Step two: joining the online learning platform
Now that your booking is confirmed for your chosen HGV licence, your journey has started! We will send your personal login details to access our online learning platform and study materials so you can start studying for your theory tests straight away.
Step three: getting your medical and provisional HGV licence
At this stage your dedicated account manager will organise a date for you to attend GTG for medical check with our on-site doctor. On this day, we’ll also send your licence to the DVLA who will process your application and grant your provisional HGV licence for the category you have chosen.
Step four: booking your theory tests
Once you receive your provisional HGV licence back from the DVLA, you’ll be able to book your theory tests and continue studying using the online study platform.
Your GTG training advisor will help you each step of the way and will book your theory test for you at your preferred DVSA theory test centre.
Step five: you’ll start your practical driver training
Once you have received confirmation that you have passed your theory test, let your training advisor know and we’ll get you booked in for your practical HGV training for dates that suit you.
Step six: completing your practical HGV training
After completing your practical training we’ll organise your practical HGV driving test. To make this stage of your training less daunting, you can complete your practical test from GTG because we’re a DVSA-approved test centre, so you’ll be tested in the same environment you learned in.
Step seven: getting your HGV licence
Once you have successfully passed your practical HGV driving test, you’ll receive your HGV licence so you can start working towards your dream career.

Very professional and can still have a good laugh! Been a wonderful experience and so glad and appreciated the help I got! Thank you Eric and also Alan which I had for one day through my week!"S.N.
"I have just qualified as a Class 1 driver with GTG in Glasgow; coming straight from a car. My first point of contact was with Greg the account manager. He talked me through the entire process and set up everything for me - all my tests and my 10 day course. My biggest thanks goes to my instructor though, Mo Gilder. I could not have asked for a better instructor and thanks to his expertise I can now start my dream career. GTG have been a joy to work with from start to finish and I cannot recommend them highly enough."Martin
