What happens when you apply for an apprenticeship at GTG?
Are you interested in applying for an apprenticeship? Fantastic! You'll learn some important life skills, kick-start your career and be ready to take on the world of work in no time. Did we mention you get paid, too? If you know it's the right step for you, there's nothing for it but to get on with your application.
Choose an apprenticeship.
If you've decided an apprenticeship is the right path for you, the first thing you'll want to do is pick your course. At GTG, we offer opportunities in a range of disciplines, including Light Vehicle Tech, Body Repair, Vehicle Refinishing, Parts, Electronic, Fire and Security Systems, Garage Equipment, Customer Service and Business Admin courses - and that's just naming a few! If you're still trying to figure out which one's the right fit, you should check out our apprenticeship programmes page, which has loads more detail about individual courses and their requirements.
Fill in our online application
Once you've got your heart set on an apprenticeship, you'll need to fill in a straightforward online form, which you can find on our course pages. It's a good idea to have a note of your SQA results for this, but we understand if you're still working towards your qualifications. It's actually really easy to fill in the form and should only take you about ten minutes. We find the best way to stay in touch with you is via email, so make sure you keep an eye on your inbox and if your contact details do change, let us know!
Complete a simple online test
In 2019, we've made it even easier for you to apply to do an apprenticeship at GTG. Once we've received your online application, if we consider you a candidate for an apprenticeship, we'll email you a simple literacy and numeracy test to complete. It's the same for every apprentice who applies, and you can complete it straight away.
Do your practical
If you've applied to be a Technician, Garage Equipment Engineer or an Electronic Fire and Security Systems apprentice, you should expect to be brought into a workshop for a practical test after the online testing stage. This is designed to check your hand-eye co-ordination, and will also give you an insight into the workshop environment and get a feel for the job. If your practical goes well, you'll head straight off to your interview on the same day, so you should be prepared for both!
Nail the interview
Every apprentice will have to go for an interview at some stage of the application process. This will either be with a member of our friendly Early Careers team, or a workshop or branch manager. You can expect to have a bit of a chat about what you get up to at school or college, and be asked if you've ever had a job or done work experience before. You might even be asked if you know much about the company, so it's a good idea to do a bit of homework first!
Time for a trial?
If you've applied for a Body Repair or Vehicle Refinishing apprenticeship and have a successful interview, the next step is a work trial in the branch. This can last from a few days to a week. You won't have the job yet, but it's a great opportunity to show you're willing to work hard and learn everything you can about the role.
Ready to give it a go? Good luck - and hopefully we'll see you at GTG very soon! And if you've got your application sorted, it could be a good time to start thinking about that interview...
