Warehouse apprentices at CJ Lang are learning the skills to build a career and become a key part of the company’s nationwide operations – thanks to expert training from GTG.
Building on the two companies’ partnership in the transport department at CJ Lang & Son, which has helped long-haul drivers learn the skills to take control of an HGV, the partnership is extending into CJ Lang & Son’s warehouse department.

Graeme Findlay, Area Business Manager for GTG, said: ‘GTG Training has been working in partnership with employers to deliver apprenticeships for more than 50 years, and last year, CJ Lang & Son joined forces with us because they wanted to upskill their employees and help future-proof their business. The partnership began with our driver apprenticeship scheme, with four candidates commencing the Driving Goods Vehicles Level 3 course in June 2021.

‘Since then, the partnership has gone from strength to strength, with eight additional drivers being enrolled on the DGV Level 3 programme, and the launch of a new apprenticeship programme. Recently, five employees started the Warehousing and Storage Level 2 apprenticeship, which is designed to give warehouse operatives the skills they need to operate equipment while maintaining a safe work environment. Once completed, all candidates will also be given the opportunity to do forklift training with GTG.

‘It is great to be working with CJ Lang & Son, a company which values apprenticeships every bit as much as we do. The commitment and enthusiasm for these programmes from everyone in the business has ensured their smooth delivery.’

CJ Lang & Son Logistics are offering a modern apprenticeship in Warehouse and Storage (Level 2) and a modern apprenticeship in Logistic Operations (Level 3) where colleagues will gain a recognised SVQ, plus the opportunity to gain an HGV 1 up to a forklift operator’s licence.

The apprentices will learn five core skills during their year-long journey with GTG: communication; I.T; numeracy; problem solving; and working with others.

Alan Brown, Distribution Manager at CJ Lang & Son, said: ‘We have been working closely with Graeme at GTG Training to support apprentices in our logistics business and help develop colleagues’ skills so they can progress in their career – this also helps us introduce fresh and important skills into our business for a new generation.

‘We have already developed our training partnership, and this is another area of our business where, with GTG’s training expertise and professionalism, we can work together to develop apprentices’ skills and equip them for careers in the industry.

‘CJ Lang are delighted to work in partnership again with GTG Training, as we recognise the benefits apprenticeships bring for our colleagues to develop and gain the right skills to perform their role to a professional standard. We believe if you have the right attitude and behaviours in the workplace, then we can hone your skills and provide the platform to thrive within our business.’
